2006 and we are still here...

Happy New Year! I woke up this morning at 6:45 a.m. feeling like I was preparing for an exam. I was trying to figure out what to open my blog with, that also makes sense for hip-hop. Then I realized that it's my 20th anniversary in the music business. Even though I hate to date myself, and I know hip-hop is definitely a young sport, I realized early in my career that the key to longevity was about evolving and staying current. That being said, it's 20 years of making money in the music business and working with the best people in the world. 20 years in the music business is like 100 years in a normal life.

It's also the anniversary of what I define as the blueprint of my life, Criminal Minded by Boogie Down Productions. The Criminal Minded album, DJ Scott La Rock, DJ Red Alert, Lyor Cohen, and Russell Simmons are a few of the reasons why I am able to tell people that I am the exception and not the rule. If you strive to exceed at anything in life, whether it's music, sports, or any other profession, you must be willing to give 110 percent and be willing to go further if necessary because no one is going to let you stroll in, grab the money, and walk out. Lotto is right when they say you have to be in it to win it. They just forgot to inform you to keep playing because they don't know when you'll win! I am here to tell you to keep playing and reach for the stars.

My blog will certainly entertain you. I have enough stories and have no problems calling people out. Fasten your seatbelt; this is going to be an interesting year!

Chris, I have had the pleasure of knowing you for about 5-6 years now and glad to see you are doing some innovative things yet once again! Congrats on being the first hip-hop mogul with a blog. I got one too for nightlife. Big things in 2006. Happy Anniversary to you and the legendary album "Criminal Minded" which is one of my top 5. Peace!

Hey! Welcome. I just wanted to be the first one to make a post here on your new blog...so I better hurrr up before someone else beats me to it! Oops, I see someone already did. I know that paying dues is a huge part of the entertainment business and so having the heart is a must. I look forward to checking your blog regularly. Peace and Happy 2006 and beyond.

RUSSELL ONCE TOLD ME TO MY FACE, "I WANT YOU TO BE MY NEXT KEVIN LILES!" "YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE OVER ONE DAY!" AFTER FEELING A LITTLE OFFENDED ABOUT BEING THE NEXT KEVIN LILES, I REPLLIED TO RUSS, "I'M GOING TO BE BIGGER THAN THAT!" IF THERE WAS ANYBODY IN THE GAME THAT I WOULD LOVE TO FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLE IT WOULD BE RUSS OF COURSE, BUT ALSO ANOTHER HIP-HOP HEAD AND QUIET PROFESSIONAL, BY THE NAME OF CHRIS "BABY CHRIS" LIGHTY!! CHRIS, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT THESE CATS IN THIS GAME, THEY ARE NOT GOING TO LET YOU STROLL YOUR WAY TO THE TOP! -AND YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST STAY IN THE GAME TO WIN (GOTTA BE IN IT TO WIN IT!) I TOLD D-NICE, THAT ALL THE UP-AND-COMING BROTHAS AND SISTAS MUST ORGANIZE AND POOL OUR CREATIVE POWERS AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO CREATE THE NEXT AND NEW "ROUND TABLE" LIKE RUSS, LYORR, KEV, DIDDY, DAME, ETC.
WE CAN HELP TO BUILD THAT NEXT "KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE" AND POWER CIRCLE TO RUN THE INDUSTRY AND HELP EACH OTHER CLIMB TO HIGHER PLACES IN THE GAME AND IMPROVE OUR QUALITIES OF LIFE SO MUCH BETTER AND BRIGHTER, AND LIVE GOOD AS RUSS, LYORR, AND THE CREW. RUSS AND LYORR ARE LIFE PARTNERS IN ALL THAT THEY DO, AND WE NEED TO FOLLOW THAT EXAMPLE! PEACE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Chris Lighty - the man, the myth, the legend.
It's definitely reassuring to hear from someone of your stature to break it down for the rest of us. Even though we know it's tough and some times seems easier to just give up, having someone with your hard earned knowledge to keep us focused on the prize is greatly appreciated!
Your experience and advise I'm sure will be relative to all aspects of business - not just the entertainment biz. So hurry up and keep em coming!!!

It's about time!!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year & Happy 20th Anniversary!
When we all came into this world of Hip Hop it was the passion and the genuine love we had for its origin. Over the years we ALL have been a blessing to one another in many ways.
Some individuals like myself greatly can appreciate you and others like you who have contributed to the History of Hip Hop.
KRS-ONE is ONE of our greatest artists of all time and I believe with you sharing your journal with the world, other Artists, Executives, Business Men & Women in Hip Hop will share some valuable insight to preserve the purity of Hip Hop.

you can be anything you want to be, if you will only trust your imagination. visualize your heart's desire; never allow the picture to distort or tarnish; keep it fresh, clear, and bright. success will enter in your life quietly and unobtrusively, without raucousness or fanfare, for it will follow the law of the universe; Everything begin in the mind!!!! Mr. Lightly I must say 20 years in the business and still going is an achievement. You have built a powerhouse with Violator. From the diverse artists on the roster I must say that your staying powere might be another 60 years...with that being said keep doing you and keep being who you are. B-Ward, I'm definetly with you on that movement. What our generation needs to learn from our mentors is SYNERGY. Most are busy trying to come, they don't tend to realize the power that lies in numbers. I definetly would love to stay up with you.

Cathleen laporte, I am very interested in sharing my experiences with the youth. I am always open to things like that. I am not the mogul that Chris Lighty is, but in my mind I am, I have been through some life threatening situations, which would leave 50 cent to ryme about. I'm not proud of them, just proud of the blessing in over-coming them.

Combat Jack, you'se a sucka for even bringing up that KO shit. It's people like you that can't come up, do to the negative energy you dish out. Why dont you go work for Wendy Williams with that clown shit.

Lighty, I'm the owner of a DVD magazine distributed in Canada. for our next issue we have a lot of fire power, including some represented by your management company. Now, I'm writing on this blog to let you know that we have secured an exclusive with Irv in which he thuroughly airs you out... Me being impartial, I want to give you an opportunity to comment on things in your own exclusive interview. I try not to take sides, and all the people that participates in the making of my DVD's know that. i just give them an outlet to speak their mind, and let the Canadian hip hop community know what's really good. If you're interested at all in answering back, or just talking about the position you play in hip hop please email me at rob.bent@showandprovedvd.com

As i eluded to before, I take no sides. I'm a brother on the come up. I do this cause I love the culture, and of course for the paper. i know you can relate. It is what it is..hope to hear from you soon.

I'm a film and music business affairs executive in the UK where my black peers are a very small community, we have the belly to move forward because we don't seek validation from anyone else. I say this to anyone reading and especially the Africans, from you have a soul you have a piece of the God type substance and from right there you should be the architect of your own destiny.
