Thinking of a master plan.

As I approach my birthday I was thinking of my master plan and it is moving along rather nicely. I have been very busy so I haven't been able to keep my blog hot but have no fear my next blog will have a new and interesting announcement to keep us all together in conversation on music, life and whatever else we decide to conversate about. But back to my master plan.Remember those records that didn't have the "call out hook" but were hot as hell anyway. For those joining that have no idea what a call out hook is it is what we in the music industry have become slaves to! It is the part of the record that you instantly remember and hooks you in. It may be the whole hook of a record or just the most catchy part of it. But lets move on. Remember when hip hop had hot hit records that didn't have a catchy sing songy hook. It had that one linerand hot beat that drew you in. What happenned? We became slaves to the system that once resisted us! As we progress we move backwards. Remember "Paid in Full"..."thinking of a master plan...I need money I used to be a stick up kid"..."fish which is my favorite dish"..."hit the studio I'm paid in full"...."what happenned to peace..peace". Obviously I jumped around the verses pulling out my favorite lines the fact is I loved that record it was hot and had no chorus! What is going on in hip hop? I will say I am just as much the problem when my clients and friends play me their records and I say "where is the chorus?". I need to ask myself is the joint hot? This is important because damn I am sick of singing along every day. Sometimes I just need a hot idea and hot beat that transports me to the scene of the record so i can digress without worrying if the program director is going to understand that this joint is hot! How hot was "Children story" by Slick Rick."Uncle Ricky please read us a bedtime story"...."Knock em out the box rick". Tell me that joint isn't in rotation on your ipod.I have made it mandatory listening to in my house to these classics. My 16 year old to my 6year old have that song on their ipods along with some other undeniables. How about this one and if you think it had a chorus callout that would work with these program directors today it would be an uphill battle but it is obviously a smash. Drumroll please."Eric B for President"..."Go get a girl and get soft and warm don't get excited you been invited to a quiet storm but now its out of hand because you told me you hate me and then you asked what have I done lately first you said all you want is love and protection let me be your angel and I'll be your protection take you out and buy you all kinds of things caught an attitude you need food to eat up I'm scheming like I am dreaming on a couch with my feet up you scream I am lazy you must be crazy thought I was a doughnut you tried to glaze me....Hot Record!!Hip Hop what happenned? We had big chorus records from day one but we also had big joints that just made you feel good! It takes two by Rob Base...if your under 30 you need to go and do your homework on these records but hip hop has to start bringing these type of cuts back as their album cuts if we are going to sell albums in this digital world!! I can go on for days but I am going to give you my top 5 classic joints that have a chorus that doesnt make sense for radio research today but the song still feels good. Some don't even have a chorus. In no particuliar order of greatness:
1.Rock the bells LL cool j
2.Children Story Slick Rick
3.Paid in Full Eric b and Rakim
4.So wat cha saying EPMD
5.The choice is yours BlackSheep(yeah it kind of has a chorus but how silly is this or that?Engine engine number nine....pick it up pick it up pick it up!So hot!)

Ofcourse I am not saying it isn't happenning today but damn we are chasing the biggest choruses possible 99 percent of the time instead of just focusing on making hot music. I have to big up Busta with "Touch it". What the hell is the chorus saying? it's hot though! We need more of these and less album fillers! As I move closer to my birthday I am still happy to have hip hop and to have been able to prosper from it so I can't be mad that we go for the kill almost every time we drop a joint but let's try a littleharder!! I will do my part!!

Can I just say this to you and Please don't be offended. The new generation of hip hop, you will be surprise to know that this is exactly what they want. They want old school flavor of hip-hop with a little twist in it. I hear all the time from these artists. Their pain and complaints is the label execs along with A&R's and those that have clout, crapp all over them. They get frustrated become bitter and think the only thing happening is the gangta stuff, which fine but you have to admitt the industry is over satuarated with gangta rapp. I'm sure you know that already. I too have a 16yr old son and he know's alot history of hip-hop it is interestig to know all that was passed down to him and the things he researched would blow you away coming from the mouth of a 16yr old. Again, there are alot of kids behind closed doors that are like
him. From the Boogie Down Bronx at least that's what they called it back in day. It's just the Bronx now in days.

Hip Hop Is at the stage for artists where theyre stumped with creating music > albums full of fillers rather then hits and follow the industry with releases in this same way. I recall when music was made creatively not to say creativity isnt in the music we hear today just artist development is missing and artists are left to them selves and the peers that influence their music rather then creating a well rounded artist with a real album! (one with no fillers!) Exposing an artists abilities is the missing key -just my oppinion, Theyre are many talented artists copy eachothers styles and directed it to create sales! Sales are good but creativity in place would make real albums sale ten times what they do now!

Ok, so now I get it. Chris, let me ask you a question.

IF you are so nostalgic then why dont you put your money where your mouth is doggie? Why dont you get behind the Kane's, Tribes, and KRS-ONE's of today? Better yet, why dont you go and get those acts and sign them?

We know that Jay-Z was too much of a coward to sign Kane, why dont you put him back on? Use some of those "Violator" connects to get Slick Rick back on since you rock to his shit in your Ipod. If you really wanna educate tha kids about Quality Hip-Hop, do your part.

But you wont do that will you Chris?

No, because its easier for you to sit here and write these bullshit blogs to give people who dont know any better the impression that you are down with the movement when the reality is that you are part of the problem. You, Mona Scott and all tha rest of these slap happy negroes who got caught up in this matrix called "Tha Music Business" but forgot what was most important about it, that being the music.

If your masterplan was to contribute to the raping and pillaging of the Hip Hop culture through promoting music that glorifies all of the worst aspects of our people WITHOUT PROVIDING ANY TYPE OF BALANCE, then you seem to be right on track. let me ask you this though brother, when is enough, enough?

At what point do you take a step to give something back to the community you got so rich exploiting? I'm not talking about some dumbassed charity basketball game, im talking about something on the same level you contributed to the madness on.

If you really know about Hip Hop then im sure you know that artists like Kane ( Who I use as an example ) made songs like "Pimping Aint Easy" but he also made songs like "Lean On Me". By illustrating both sides of the coin he provided balance. It cant be all death-murder-kill music just as it cant be all Peace-love-blessings songs either.

Hip Hop is not monolithic, im not saying you gotta be Chuck D all tha time, but that dont mean you gotta be Lil Kim all tha time either. It's about BALANCE. So, Since you have already co-signed a whole lotta tha bullshit Chris, when you gonna represent for the other side of the collective conciousness?

Not that I expect you to cause I know that you music business executive cats are spineless jellyfish. The truth of the matter is, that's how you got to be as successful as you are cause we both know that strong men with backbone dont last in this industry in that capacity. What pisses me off though is the way you be trying to front like you really are down for Hip Hop.

You and these cats that have helped to fuck up tha state of Hip Hop wanna act all contrite and shit like you aint directly profiting from things being the way they are now. If you dont like the state of Hip Hop put some cats on that can change it. Forget all the "Problem Artist" talk, sign a Rakim or Doug Fresh. Sign someone new and spend the money to promote him that you do on some of your more well known artists. IN other words STOP FAKING JAX CHRIS.

You pop that revolutionary shit, but from what I see, you acting like a fucking sell out doggie, and that confuses tha shit outta me. You are either gonna be part of the solution or part of tha problem fam, So I ask you, which side of the fence are you on?

Yo.

What I like about artists like Missy Elliott is that she tried singlehandedly to bring the old school back...and definetely added her own twist. She is one of the most innovative artists around in my humble opinion.

Also, Ying Yang, while they are not my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE or anything, I have noticed that they have a definite old school feel and make me talk to my girls about breakin'. I could never do the centepede cuz by thet time that came out, I was gettin my little skeeta bites and I wasn't about to hurt my nips, dude, but I tried to do the backspin and all dat. I mean, they mix breakin with strippin, but you know it's all good.

Lastly, I liked Nelly n'em's GRILLZ cuz they brought back the biting...the LL style rhymes so that made me have the talk with my girls about where some of the lines came from.

All in all, producers need to give the people what they need not just what they want and what they need is some truth and some feel good. Music can provide an education as well as an escape so that people can turn to it versus turning to other conscious altering devices i.e. drugs n shit. I take my hat off to people like Jermaine Dupri who are all about makin money, totally trendy, nothing especially socially conscious about him or any of his artists that I have noticed over the years, but damn sho gets you to wanna move. Didn't he bring out Jagged Edge, too? Well, I am not in the industry and don't get paid to keep up with who's doin what and who's signin who and who's swingin on who's thang, but as far as I know, they were sosodef and they are still comin tight after all this time.

It's nice to tie the old school in with the new, but more importantly people just need to be innovative and stop tryin to create a formula that sells. Speak from the heart. Creativity will always find a place in history even if the artist has to die to get their props. That's how art goes sometimes...that's why people sweat Biggie and Pac a decade later. And they are still comin out with hotter shit than half of the people who try to copy their styles til this day.

(some of the) Artists who I don't buy (purely cuz I have other priorities), but have the UTMOST respect for are Mos Def, Kanye, Common, Remy Ma (that whole bravado is so f'in' old school),

In the words of LIL KIM, get your own shit, why you ridiin mine?

Mr. Lighty I commend you on years of excellence. It is people like yourself that inspire and motivate the youth of today to be great leaders in the future. I just wanted to bring to your attention a very serious issue. NJ has undergone many changes within the past five years due to gang activity and violence. However, there is one group of artists that actually have combined old school rap with positive/ influential messages while simultaneously adopting mainstream flows and production to bring to the public the closest thing to Tupac since his death. They perform at rallies and marches of self awareness and non violence while still managing to get the utmost respect in many of the worst areas in NJ. These guys are able to talk about real life and real things so that real people can relate. if you visit www.myspace.com/allloyalpeople you will be able to hear some outsanding positive tracks about 'World Peace' 'Mother's Day' and 'Black History Month'. Billy Cash and A.L.P. are focused on making music and not just rapping to a beat. Visit www.myspace.com/alpakathemagnumboys to get a sample of the group's activities.

Listen man. I deal with the dudes who make decsions all the time an they are not trying to hear it. Chris, are you really going to do your part, or are you just feeling nostalgic. I say if you really want to do this and you really want to be true to the art...everytime some kid runs the gauntlet, networks, and finally gets to sit down with you here is what you do. Listen quietly to everything he has with an open mind. I know it sounds crazy, but this is what you gotta do. I just recently sent some material out to one of your "people" this morning. It should be interesting to see the response. If you really want to find whats goin on with unsigned artists just go on myspace. Post a friggin comment. Give some positive and constructive feedback and contribute to the culture. I am at: www.myspace.com/verblmessiah
Check it out...do it to put a stop to this "reverse-evolution"...do it for Hiphop. Work with raw talent....don't just go looking for the easy way out. That will lead to the birth of career longevity and cultural revitalization.

Elements to consider for a materplan:
-do not try to Duplicate (the greats were great because they were First) but do try to capture the Essence of the Greats you so duly pointed out and look for those artists whom Reinvent it and make it their own.

-Change will come about if you keep your mind, and more importantly, your ear open and down with the streets to the endless amount of talent that exist out there beyond the corporate machine.

-Communication and then access is the key Chris, thanks for the dialogue.

either i am drunk or more people need to be on this blog. there were more people on here before you announced your announcement. shit. what you wanna talk about?...how people are afraid to hear their voices reverb? what you wanna know, k dude. i'ma keep it real whatchu wanna know? i am against d**k=ridin' so i will keep it real witchu. if i am down to $80 in my pocket what i got to lose?

i am concerned about the state of hip hop but this is nothing new. i am concerned about myself, but all i can do is pray. hey, prayer works. no matter what the people say. hip hop. who gave it that name? do we need a new name for it? if "we" didn't come up with it, then maybe we need a new name and we need to reinvent the wheel. why not?

let's make hip hop or whatever a hybrid vehicle...in demand. right now i would compare it to a HUMMER" which is blood thirsty and wasteful. let's become fruitful and powerful. all we need is resources and the underground grassroots got yo' back, Chris. Whatchu doin. write us back, man. whatchu waitin on the messaiah or however you spell it?

What up Chris
I met you years ago at Howard when Sean(Puff) were students their.I'm been rhyming since 83 and have been in the game more than twenty years and I'm 34 now.The bullshit that I see out now disgust me and all of a sudden hip hop is a game to me it's not a game it's for blood. When I say blood it's all about the competition which now everybody wants production from this and that man because they think it will garner them a hit song. The only way to have a hit song is an artist sitting the fuck down and taking integrity to write phenominal lyrics, now a days you don't hear that just pure lazziness and relying on a dope beat to cover for lack of skills. For real alot of the beats I hear are bullshit and reruns and I'm tired of that shit.I know so many like Trevor (Busta) who I respect as a good friend but for some reason I want more from Busta not what folks are expectin to hear I mean it's dope so Bus can pass but as of lately Missy has slipped. The thing is artist are not artist they can't be themselves and create them to give to the world and that is what is different about the A&R's of the past alot of them let the artist be who he is.Now you have to many managers and fake ass record execs poping shit about a hit,you know what makes hits today paying a radio jock off on some payola giving him trips ,cash ,and worst off lables paying for their Billboard spots all you lables do it and that shit is bogus.I only buy old hip hop albums like Freddy Fox,Kool G,the old Wu this new shit is garbage no feeling and nobody sticks to their album title and subject matter.I could argue all year and hours on the subject of hip hop because it was meant for another purpose now all I see is record company leased rides, cribs, and paid video ho's,and not to mention fake thuggin and rims the listening public wants somebody they can relate to fuck rims. My album will dropping this year and I will show rapperz how it's done you noticed I said rapperz not MC's we don't have MC's anymore now we have and industry full of lip syncing rhyming behind your vocals, copy cat, yasser boss ass niggaz from the management to the independant that's relies on the major's.Hip Hop is in fuckin trouble and personally some of you industry ass lickers need to be shipped off to a remote island and left to starve. In order to keep this art ,culture and way of living alive to destroy anyone trying to over exploit or music I live breathe and shit hip hop so if you agree with some of my ponts make a change.I'll holla at you Chris when I come to NY no offense taken but put your heart where your mouth is.I'll see you at the top.

Happy Birthday!

It is a great feeling to see a friend, especially a brother make it in this type of business. I remember you told me about 15 years ago that you were going to be on top. You said one day I will have money like Russell Simmons and people will respect me. Although people respect the violators in the street they did not respect you and take you serious in business meetings. Some people did not believe you could be a businessman, they thought you was just another road manager running around from show to show with The JB's and Tribe Called Quest. I wonder where are those people now.

Rome was not build in a day! Violator Management is still a young child and you are nurturing your child so do it in stages. "If you build it,
they will come" this is a way to look at things as you build your empire! When you are ready for the raw and talented people and groups I believe they will come and if I knew you the way I think I do you probably have a plan for that already. The "Master Plan" Peace.

Hey Lighty what is up my man? I just want to say you have been doing a great job with 50, Busta and Missy. You are a great person! I was just wondering when the Fifty brand computers is going to come out. Have you made the deal yet? Anyways just wanted to let you know that YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!!!!

Posted by: Brandy Welch at August 8, 2006 04:11 PM

Great Point
If you kill the verse and have a raw beat you dont need a chorus!!!!
My Philosophy, I got it Made, Raw, I got to Have it, Sometimes I Ryhme Slow, Slow Down, New York State of Mind, Verbal Power, Come Clean, I got You Open, Pot Holes in My Lawn, The Big Pay Back, Sucker MC's, etc, etc, etc, and the funny part of the game is that the game doesnt make the HOT song the one that came together with the right balance but the one that can become the most repetative.
Its not about any of the Hip Hop elements or art forms. It's about how many times do you need to hear it before you remeber it. Which is the real point of your conversation. If a song works without a chorus and you can add scratches to bridge the verses then you know the record is not only HOT but original creative HIPHOP. If you can scratch in an instrumental without the lyrics the record is HOT. All the Chorus really does is makes it catchy and popular, which is not a bad thing but when thats the receipe or cookie cutter thats not Hip Hop, thats mass production.

The emcee thats most respected by emcees is not known for his choruses Guess Who? Follow the Leader, Know the ledge, Microphone Fiend, My Melody, etc etc etc. Now thats GOOD OL HIPHOP...

One thing, my good brother:
I really feel the science you drop, however, you need to use "white space" when you write. You run all your paragraphs together, and it is hell on the eyes. I had the worst time getting through your blogs. I am sure that I am not the only one.

Hip-Hop Embracing past

We in hip-hop and rap have ashort memory until you go to a club and the DJ does a old school set that makes you loose your mind! Like you said what happend to the lyrical rappers and hot beats?

Answer a hip hop radio station that plays nothing but classic rap. notice I said classic rap not OLD School. I hate the term old school because it does not do justice to the music created in that era. Now the word classic can be a song made last year or two or three decades ago, innovative joints that make you go crazy when they get played in hip hop we are not embracing our rich history, the more you know about the music the morecreative you will be as a artist. Look at the words that used to describe the music.

Fresh: New, Crisp, Clean, Innovative, untouched

Fly: To rise above and soar, to leave the earth for a higher plane.

Dope: To intoxicate, distort reality, addictive substances

We must inject these elements back into the music and culture in order to leave a lastin foot print on time and history.
