Amen!
I don't know what's going on or what's been going on, or being said...Which I'm sure I will hear/read about...but you are absolutely right! There ARE people in the game who are trying to just bring folks down, hating for no reason except to just plain HATE. DISGUSTING!
I've known you for some yrs now Mr. CL and you have ALWAYS been about your business!!! Although there are plenty of snakes in the biz with you...you have ALWAYS stayed TRUE and HONEST in such a conniving and shady business! I have NEVER seen you do "bad" business, EVER!!! And that is HARD to say with all the people around ~ doing what they do, asking for what they do...and I APPLAUD you and RESPECT you to the FULLEST!!!
I know that everyone cannot live the life of Chris Lighty, nor can they even imagine what you deal with on the daily! People who know you KNOW that you are a VERY GOOD "BUSINESS MAN" and that's what you do!
I have never seen you instigate or try to BE INVOLVED in anything negative! I HAVE witnessed and seen you being 'about your business' as opposed to feeding the B.S. that goes on!
Again, I don't know what went down or what people are saying has happened or ...blah blah blah, but all I wanted to say is this:
PLEASE Mr. Lighty, continue to stay YOU!!! You are such an influential and powerful individual in this business who helps SO MANY artists!!! Not only the artists, the entertainers and everyone in the entertainment industry, but the consumers/fans/kids as well! I know that most can't see ALL that you do....and all you choose NOT to do :) but, I know you know that YOU MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO SO MANY PEOPLE and we THANK YOU for keeping up the business for so many and for not letting the BS stop any of it!
Prayin for PEACE for you and all those around you, including the haters who try to stir up all the NONSENSE!
God Bless

Hey,

I truly understand your point of view Mr Lighty : u're a businessman and this type of shit is really bad for your business.

But as a businessman u should also told your client (Fifty, who could talk to Mr Marvin Bernard aka Yayo) that BEEF is NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS EITHER. There is nothing wrong with battling or having a healthy competition : we all know that's the essence of our culture.

But when it comes to BEEF (like the current with Cam'ron) it made us, black peoples, look like complete fools. The situation with Busta's bodyguard, now a 14 year's old kid,...For what ? BEEF.

PLEASE TALK TO YOUR CLIENTS ! WITH HIP HOP WE CAN SELL SNEAKERS, CARS, COMPUTERS,CLOTHES, FOOD EVEN WATER ! We can make tour all over the world ! Don't let such foolishness destroy what we all, as hip hop lovers and black peoples, have build.

Peace.

the element of danger in Hip Hop and "beefs" are something u've been accustomed to since u were "holding down" Red Alert in the 80's... But yes, at a certain point in time, the shit should stop... But look at Puff or Jay, with all their accomplishments- they still have to deal with pettyness. But IMO, u should check Yayo, this is the 2nd time something bad & regretful has happened and he's been involved- yadig? But i'm obviously telling u the obvious...

Bad press equals increased sales. If we as consumers turned a deaf ear to rumors. Maybe artists of substance would be heard more. Instead we look to tear each other down any chance that we get. If we are not doing the tearing we are doing the listening. So as a marketing tool artists and I use the term loosely here. Can do something totally out of character, get arrested, and have their name in the press for a month. Right before the release of their new project. People just know when your being manipulated that's all. WWW.MYSPACE.COM/OUTABODIES

1st of all I doubt you even wrote this your self, I’m your assistant aka Nicholas Cage aka GHOST RIDER threw you on assist on this one. For the record, I fux w/ Violator, you have help my favorite artists make power moves.
But on that note, I expected more from mr. Violator him self, I mean what’s really good? Are you going to at least comment On Yayo’s actions, isn’t he one of your clients?
Funny you mentioned ROME, the biggest super power that ever existed. But just like Rome, Violator will fall some day, so keep that in mind, it’s just a matter of time. Unless you clean up your acts, you might be in the same boat as a has been aka Suge knight

Let's get real...It's not Hip-Hop that is violent and out of control. It's "The Rap Industry" which is the business of selling ganstas, pimps, hoes, bitches and their lifestyle/adventures to voyeristic middle America via compact disc, tennis shoes, and videos!

You, and everyone that ever profitted from exploited young ignorant Blacks for your finacial gain are forever to BLAME (U Fuk'n Sell-Out)!

Long live Hip-Hop, but let the "Rap Industry" die!!!

Posted by: Da Truth at March 28, 2007 03:49 PM

I don't think everyone realizes that even IF your clients do make mistakes, or become involved in "situations" that at times you have no control over it! I know and am sure you speak with your clients...as do other managers, consultants and advisors of artists! However, that doesn't mean that they will take the advice and guidance, especially if it is PERSONAL and not BUSINESS! (These are grown men with egos and pride as well as past encounters and situations...etc.)
People who are blaming the managers and other business folks, have to be reminded that the artists who end up doing what they do, have a mind of their own~with actions of their own! So please don't assume that because it makes press that all business people want and welcome this kind of press and behavior! It seems obvious that Mr. Lighty spoke abt this issue at hand because he was disgusted by it as well as wanted to speak abt it to clear a few things. He said that he doesn't even wanna entertain all the rumors! So the people who are thinking he is such a BUSINESSMAN that he doesn't care about the kids, about his clients, about people getting hurt-even killed! Come on!!! Read what he wrote, this is WHY he is taking the time out of his busy life to write this blog! To stop the nonsense and violence! Maybe it's not obvious to all, but I can definitely vouch for Mr. Lighty and say that I have never seen him try to be involved in the negative happenings that go on in this business! To my knowledge, whenever situations did arise with him being able to make a negative/shady call, if he chose...I have witnessed the OPPOSITE! That is why I HAVE MUCH RESPECT FOR HIM!
GOD BLESS MR. LIGHTY!!!
Keep doing yo thang, sir! :)

Very strange. I just came here to post this not knowing that this was the topic. I don't listen to the BS and propaganda so I don't even know what you are upset about, but something has to give, you are right. I did happen to catch the clip of Karl Rove dancing to some kind of "rap" at some presidential event. Sad, sad picture that was, him posturing as a HIP HOPPA...makes you wonder what the world is really coming to. Bush crackin bad jokes about Cheney cappin folks. Wow!

Ay, Chris...could you do us a favor though and not speak in all caps like you are yelling at us? LOL we didn't do it! and break up your paragraphs cuz my eyes were hurting at the end of that...but you don't have to take my word for it:)

Keep doing what you do, man. You know God has a plan and only he knows how all of this will turn out, but as long as He's on your side, you don't need to stress.

The Granby Theater in downtown Norfolk Wednesday night.
The Granby Theater in downtown Norfolk Wednesday night.

NORFOLK -- City officials announced today that they have revoked the special exception for the Granby Theater, meaning that the venue will no longer be permitted to offer entertainment or serve alcohol.

The announcement follows a public safety inspection Wednesday night that uncovered multiple violations, officials said.

The announcement means the future of the theater will remains in doubt after a man was critically injured during a private party.

Earlier today, the theater's management said the theater would be closed temporarily, but would reopen Monday for all functions except club nights.

Although the theater remains for sale, the space is still functioning, events coordinator Billie Evans said earlier today.

Evans said the theater would resume taking appointments for future events. Pending contracts for charity events, wedding receptions, holiday parties and jazz events will be honored, Evans said. Events scheduled for this week have been postponed, and if the events cannot continue refunds will be issued, she said.

The move to close the theater came hours after the vice mayor issued a call for accountability by nightclubs as well as steps to curb violence in the black community.

Police said a man opened fire around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday during an event called "The Soul Provider Birthday Bash" that featured performances by hip-hop artists, including Clipse. It was hosted by 8Ball and MJG.

One man was shot repeatedly. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Police said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

About 5 p.m. Wednesday, a team of inspectors from Norfolk Fire-Rescue went into the club, and they were there for several hours.

"We did a spot inspection," said Battalion Chief Bruce Evans, a fire department spokesman. That came after "some phone calls came into the Fire Marshal's office with concerns about overcrowding and people's inability to rapidly exit the theater."

Evans said the club's management was given citations for 19 different fire code and "life-safety issues."

Shortly after the inspectors emerged, the club put out the word that it was suspending operations.

"We have voluntarily closed down," T.N. Clary, a management consultant for the theater, said late Wednesday.

Bobby Wright, an owner, said late Wednesday that he wants to sell or lease the site, and by 11 p.m. the building's marquee had been made into a For Sale sign.

Evans said the owner "voluntarily agreed to close down until he can get these things worked out."

The exact list of violations was not available Wednesday night.

Norfolk Vice Mayor Anthony L. Burfoot speaks to the media about the shooting Wednesday afternoon. Watch video from Burfoot's news conference. GENEVIEVE ROSS/THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

At a news conference earlier in the day, Vice Mayor Anthony L. Burfoot said he is concerned about the potential for such violence to reverse downtown redevelopment.

"Any establishment that wants to try to attract the type of crowd that was at that establishment last night, then they need to understand that we will shut them down. And they can come to me if they want to say that it's a racial issue. I'll fight that battle," said Burfoot, who is black.

"The type of party they had last night, again, was - and I hate to use 'the hip-hop crowd,' because that's unfair to some folks - but when I talked to friends of mine that know folk that had ventured to that place last night, that's basically what I have to say," he said.

"But it's unfair to single out the entire hip-hop community and say that everybody fits that category when they do not."

Burfoot also said he wanted to shine a light on the "real issue," which was "not the club last night... it's black-on-black crime. And these are the things that need to be addressed. You know, other folk are going to have to get involved. The police cannot solve this problem... Enough is enough."

Burfoot spoke flanked by several men, including community activist Michael Muhammad of the Nation of Islam and Curt Anderson, executive director of the Coalition of Young Black Professionals. Muhammad called for civic, political and religious leaders to start a dialogue on the community's needs.

The incident that sparked it all occurred in a historic theater that reopened in 2005 after extensive renovations.

Clary said hundreds of people attended a party for a manager of some local musicians. It was open to the public. He said 32 security guards were on hand. They checked people with metal-detecting wands and searched them.

Shortly after 1 a.m., patrons heard shots. People ducked for cover and lay on the floor.

Officers took a Norfolk man into custody shortly after the shooting. Joseph Reid III, 23, of the 1200 block of Marsh St. was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

State Alcoholic Beverage Control officials are investigating the incident.

Clary said the management of the theater shares Burfoot's sentiment about downtown and keeps the safety of its patrons paramount. He said management has worked to maintain a classy, safe environment. A dress code is posted at the entrance. He noted that actor Jamie Foxx recently hosted a party there.

The shooting, Clary said, was "an isolated event, outside of the character of the club."

The staff is reviewing how a person sneaked a gun through security, he said.

"It's totally devastating," said Terrence Thornton, a member of Clipse who goes by the name Pusha T. "It put a black eye on everything we stand for to our fans and the community."

He said the group had no affiliation with the shooting suspect or the victim. "Nothing like this has happened before. We don't promote violence to anyone and we don't want that going on."

But he cautioned against blaming hip-hop or his group in particular.

"I don't condone the 'music made me do it' theory," he said.

"It's easy to say dress code, but what does the dress code have to do with anything? It's more about infrastructure and organization. Every time we've done events there we had a successful night."

"The Clipse are definitely willing to do any and everything in cooperation with local government. Anything they feel like we should do in regards to curb violence, we're here," he said.

Shae Haley, a longtime friend of Clipse and a member of the group N.E.R.D., was at the club when the shooting began.

"All of us came to have a good time. Nobody in my circle knows who was doing the shooting or knows who got shot... We were trying to throw a birthday celebration.

"The last thing we were trying to do was to ruin a good time. We never wanted it to end up like this."

Ezekiel 34:17-20 (Darby Translation)

"And as for you, my flock, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between the rams and the he-goats.

Is it too small a thing unto you to have eaten up the good pastures, but ye must tread down with your feet the rest of your pastures; and to have drunk of the settled waters, but ye must foul the rest with your feet?

And my sheep have to eat that which ye have trodden with your feet, and to drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.

Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah unto them: Behold, [it is] I, and I will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. "

As a business man I am sure that you will handle this situation accordingly. I also think that most people who can think for themselves and use that old thing called "Common Sense" would know that 50 cent had nothing to do with slapping a child.

I am not too familiar with Tony Yayo but I would hope that he did not do this. I think that we as a people get a lot of more press time in regards to bad press then we do good press. I just know that there are tons of Rock Stars, Country Singers and the like that do a lot of crazy things that we don't get to hear about.

Unfortunately this form of prejudice is the norm in the media, they have to continually condition everyone to believe that this is just how Black People Are.

The forces in high places are looking to bring Hip Hop down because hip hop is becoming to mainstream and to big. The pockets of people like you and others are becoming to deep and you are becoming to powerful, that does not sit well with HIGH TOPS.

Of course you knew all of that (LOL).

I still want to know what happened. 50 slappin babies??? I guess I will have to dig through the gossip files to know what the heck y'all are talking about. I usually agree with the fact that the media is taking part in this negative media frenzy against "us", but on this one, I haven't even heard a whisper. Usually even when I don't look for the info, it comes to me somehow seeping through the cracks. Not this one. I guess I betta ask somebody if I want to know what all this is about.

But aside from all of that, HAPPY EASTER.

Chris,
At this moment you are on top of your game! While you are on top, The Media, other management companies, etc., are going to try to bring you down. You have one of the best management rosters in the business! Your company is and always will be a target! I say keep your business sense and don't let them get to you in any way, because if they do, they win! STAY FOCUSED! To me, this blog you sent was something THEY were waiting for AND PLAYS INTO THEIR HANDS!
Anger and Irritation blinds you and when that happens we all make mistakes! Keep doing what you are doing! For the Record, most of you on this blog should use spell check on your computer before you post a blog. It's ridiculous that most of you are grown, write profanity and can't spell properly!

I produce, flow, and have had the opportunity to work with some really talented producers in the game off the strength off my skill, but it never seems to be enough. I am not looking for pity or help or anyhting. I guess I am just venting. I am not completly in love with the direction that Hiphop is taking and I know that I can make a difference, but I just hope that I put in enough work in time. This is not hip hop but once again the most vicious tool in the nation, THE MEDIA is placing a blindfold over everyone's eyes! I have been in contact with CNN, UPN, and 60 Minutes in regards to the recent topics that have blown the nation away!
1) Stop Snitching Movement
2) Correlation between Hip Hop and Imus's comments
3) Too much Violence in Hip Hop

Here is a portion of the message that was sent to Anderson Cooper of CNN!
...we are authors or shall I say reporters giving our narrative of the story! We are not negative people in general but there are a few bad seeds as is the case in any subculture within American society! To stigmatize a group of individuals based on the actions of some of its members is unrealistic and ignorant! However the part that they are leaving out is that corporate America and its ability to 'merge' has created what is being labeled as hip hop!Hip hop culture in its entirety has plenty of positives that we have created however corporate America does not want the voices of artists (like myself and let's say Talib Kwali for example) being heard when we promote positive messages and self awareness! Corporate America has made it so that rap artists like myself cannot acquire a deal with a 'Major' ( i.e. Universal, Sony, etc.)unless we are promoting violence, and disrespect and using vulgar language! Money is what drives these corporations at this point not plaques and with contemporary hip hop - violence, drugs, and sex SELL, as they have been utilized as a marketing tool with Rock n Roll in this country! 50 cent is one of the biggest rap artists out right now but not because he promotes violence but because his fans support him ...why blame 50 for his lyrics when over 30 million people have purchased his music in support!
Which brings us to the topic of snitching. What everyone is failing to realize is that there are many underlying factors that attribute, perpetuate, and assist in sustaining this movement. First off we as young inner city minorities have been conditioned to treat law enforcement in such a way! Point blank within our impoverished communities there is oftentimes no justice; there is 'Just Us'! The college grads get pulled over, strip searched, and violated the same way the ex cons do! If you call the police they come to the scene treating you like the victim because of the many stereotypes that exist. I actually was supposed to go undercover with UPN News' I- Team to expose the harsh police brutality and mistreatment that plague the streets of certain NJ inner cities. This is just a brief overview but I just want AMERICA to understand this is not our fault. If we snitch not only does it put ourselves and our families in jeopardy and at risk by violating The Code of the Streets but the police won't be there to save us when retaliation occurs! For example I called the police when i found my grandfather dead and I told them that I found a man dead at my house possibly from gun shots (in an attempt to make them put a rush on things) and they still took forty five minutes to appear on the scene! Snitch for what! Snitch so the little people can continue falling while the big problems still exist! We do not make the guns or supply them to these neighborhoods we are the recipients so why isn't anybody blaming those initiate the whole process or is everyone scared to speak up about that and they rather resort to the scapegoat method and blame the rappers! This is so similar to the fake War on Drugs! They lock the criminals up that don't have lawyer money (your average corner street level dealer) while the suppliers ( which are hardly young black males or rappers) sit indictment free! Now does this make sense (or cents cause its sure making a lot of dollars)! Feel free to visit any one of the sites that have my music uploaded! If you go to anyone of my myspace pages you will find an early dedication to Mother's Day! Enjoy and support real hip hop! www.myspace.com/billycashakahollywood

There are many forms of reality when it comes to the issue of hip-hop/rap. There are those who enjoy its entertainment as an extention of their masculinity(manHood) and those who truly embody and live the lifestyle. When the streets are constantly given credit for the validity of the music you have another reality that is present. The gimick that has been branded is a harsh reality to some and as long as rap stars, who are on the front lines of the business, gain fame and money the reality that feeds the machine, which is the streets and its not going to go away. Its a grim reality that takes the REAL tool on the youth and urban communities in which hip/rap glorifies. Blackman Pay Attention!

Big Respeck to Chris for holding down the business of Hip Hop and helping so many big cats with their careers. however, trying to prevent, contain and support artist's issues whether or not it happened during work hours or in personal time is never going to be easy. It almost seems "the richer you make em, they more problems they give you" so because of the volatility of your products (clients) within your trade, you will need to put some very strategic communication contingencies in place to protect your business and ultimately your profits. Your clients will need to understand and respect your commercial position. Anyway, I come from and still live in London, England and we currently have major issues with school kids killing each other because they think that hip hop gangster style of living is the only way to make money. They really believe in a "kill or be killed philosophy" You American guys have been through that shit 10 - 15 years ago! American artist who are failing to see platinum sales should look at creating music with European radio appeal hence profiting from touring and merchandising sales. We all love your music over hear, but at the moment some US artists are only selling music to school kids who can only afford to download your music of the net anyway. Then all some of artist tend to do is inspire the teenagers to act like they are are real gangsters from the ghetto. Let me tell you, we have no ghettos compared to the ones in America. Sure you can also blame violent movie's and video games, but kids don't walk around every hour of the day inspired by these elements as they do with with ipods stuck in their ears! Would be great if Chris could get a few of all his high profile clients together and make a very powerful all star album promoting no guns, knifes and gangs? Now that would drum up some major sales world wide! On the note of Chris's comments on Hip Hop artists not entertaining enough to generate the required sales.... I agree, I have been involved the UK music business for over 27 years and I remember buying my first copy of Right On magazine in 1982/3 from a local news agent in the UK, I read it and went back the next day to order a yearly subscription! I stopped buying them in 2000. The reason I loved that magazine was because it was full of young black entertainers like Curtis blow, Whoodini, Eric b and Rakim, New edition etc etc, and what got me most was the fact that they all had a unique stage show costume that complimented their music, whether it be clothes or hair styles, it made you want to go and see them live just for that reason. The hip hop artists stage custom styles continued until late 80's when Bobby Brown, Teddy Riley and Mc Hammer changed up the seen by wearing mad baggy pants also suits in their videos and on stage. So what you saw in the video was what you saw on the live stage! The 90's saw Jodeci with jeans and big black boots and biggie in suits etc courtesy of Mr Sean Combs. But after Biggies death, video and stage costume disappeared and artist's started dressing like regular people on the streets and in the audience. The excitement had gone, performances were boring to watch and the superstar presence had vanished. But Puffy came back again in 97 with Mase video and brought stardom feel back to the stages again with dance moves and glam. What Hip Hip needs now is real entertainers and stars, a rapper can have £300 million in the bank but still does not have the WoW factor for the fans to invest in the next album. So well done to P. Diddy! show em how its done! Message to all rap artists: spread your wings and fly...The world is yours!
Bless!

Well I'm going to say I'm a female and I Love Hip-hop, it don't matter what kind. Whatever I'm feeling is what I want to her. The purpose of Music is to tell a story , to tell a story is to Entertain, to entertain is to Please. You can't blame one group of hip-hop stars, because of the story they have to tell, hey everybody has a story to tell, even me(wink*wink*)far as whatever beef you may have it all comes from hating. No matter what you may do someone is always going to hate. Everyone knows what a Hater is. So I'll leave you with this one:
"MuCh LoVe"

Oh can't forget the children, Hip-hop is also from the streets, and the streets aren't raising our children, you are, as a parent suppose to be raising your child. So if the streets is raising your child I take hip-hop as a form of a survial guide for those that are on the street.

(SAVE OUR KIDS)

Dear Mr. Lighty
I am Nikita Harris. I hope to raise my family in a secure and loving environment. I am able to work to secure this and determined to be successful. I am ethically minded and hunger for a challenge. I have been dealing with the science of customer service for most of my professional life and I am assured that I am the perfect candidate.

After many years of working directly with people in diverse professional settings, I am seeking to leverage my experience in a customer service/ Management position within the field of Business/ marketing at the International level. For this reason, I would very much like to be considered as a strong candidate.

Ideally, a position will allow me the opportunity to utilize my experience gained as a manager with Danice clothing store. In this capacity, I managed this flagship store in all areas of customer relations, sales generation and reporting, basic accounting, workflow management, staff training and supervision, and problem resolution. Additional experience includes working as a personal assistant. In these positions, I have succeeded in positioning my office for commercial growth through coordination of unique public relations opportunities.

Much of my experience is transferable, specifically in the areas of management and customer service support; however, I look forward to learning broad areas of relationship servicing, Management products and services, and industry principals. Given the opportunity, I am confident that my experience and personable disposition would be an asset to your family.

For your convenience, I have attached my resume for your review. Realizing the limitations of the written page, I would welcome the opportunity to participate in a personal interview to answer any of your questions and better present my qualifications. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Sincerely,

Nikita Harris
